I am heading into my 8th year as an Otters Host Family

March 9th, 2010 by Sally Gries Weber

From Host Family, Tracy Hunter:

I have great memories and funny stories about all my players that have stayed with me during these years.  Having these players stay with me makes me feel closer to the game than just sitting in the stands and rooting for my favorite team.  If you ask me who my favorite player is on the team it will always be the players staying with me.  One Otter I hosted handed me his bat that he used to hit back, to back, to back homeruns with until it broke, I will always keep that bat.  These players don’t make a lot of money so giving me a bat that gave him success made me feel special; he could have given it to anyone.  I even had a player that would cook us dinners when we came home after games.  I think the hardest part about being a host family is when the players either get released or the season comes to the end. These players become part of your family and it’s hard to say goodbye.  Once you start hosting Otter players you will see how great these guys are on and off the field.

Jake Rogers

March 8th, 2010 by kevincope

While at the college coaches convention in January, I received the name of a player who was previously with an affiliated team. Jake Rogers was drafted in the 22nd round of the 2007 June draft by the Washington Nationals.

Rogers is a six foot, 190 pound infielder who played his college baseball at South Dakota State University. During his two seasons in the Nationals farm system Rogers played mainly at second base but he also had a few games at third and first.

It had been 10 years between draft picks for South Dakota State but Rogers was able to put an end to that when the Nationals selected him in the 22nd round.

Rogers is originally from Lewiston, Idaho.

Jose Sanchez

March 4th, 2010 by kevincope

In January, I went to a coaches convention in Dallas. The purpose of going was to meet coaches and try to get player information. While at the convention I was handing out fliers and posting them for people to see.

One of our fliers caught the attention of a coach who was putting the information into his phone.  The coach ended up being an assistant at Delaware State University. We talked for a little while, and he said he would send me the information on one of his seniors from 2009. That player was Jose Sanchez.

Prior to the 2009 season Sanchez, who is a shortstop, was a Wallace Watch National Player-of-the-Year Candidate. In 45 games last year he hit .291 with 34 runs and 28 RBI’s. In those 45 games he had a .958 fielding percentage with 7 errors.

In 2008, Sanchez hit .347 in 49 games. He had 6 home runs with 43 runs and 30 RBI’s. He was an All-MEAC Second Team selection

Matt Maher

February 28th, 2010 by kevincope

Back in December, we had a meeting in Evansville to discuss how we wanted to approach the upcoming season. It was a way for all of us to get on the same page. While we were at the meeting we covered some players that I had researched beforehand.

There were several players on my list that I wanted to run by our manager and see what he thought. One of the names was outfielder Matt Maher from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

Last season Matt hit .339 with 45 runs and 27 RBI’s. He also had a good season on the base paths by stealing 30 bases. During his career at Fairleigh Dickinson he had 201 hits and 71 stolen bases.  Last season Matt was Second Team All-NEC and Second Team All-New Jersey Collegiate Association.

During his time at Farleigh Dickinson, Maher studied communication and was a member of the Communication Honor Society.  He was recognized for his academic achievements, and his work both on and off the field.

We are looking forward to seeing Matt this upcoming Spring.
